The U.S. Naval Monument, a 202-foot tall obelisk, is the tallest monument at the Vicksburg National Battlefield.
The 202 foot high obelisk was patterned after the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The role of the Union navy in the Vicksburg Campaign was crucial, for without the gunboats to protect his transports, General Grant could never have crossed his army to the east side of the Mississippi River to attack Vicksburg.

The man who threatened to assassinate President Barack Obama and claims himself to be the son of God, will spend the next 36-months in federal custody. 42-year old Steven Joseph Christopher was in front of a judge Friday and originally faced up to five years in jail. It is unknown if he will be held in a state facility. Christopher was arrested back in January after officials say he made internet threats to the Commander-in-Chief via the internet. A judge ruled Christopher competant to stand trial in July and he pleaded guilty to the charges in August.
