Neptune has a 'warm' south pole, astronomers find
2001 shows the planet Neptune. An international team of astro-
nomers say that Neptune, long dismissed as a cobalt-blue
gas giant cloaked in deathly cold, has a relatively warm
south pole. (AFP/NASA-HO/File)

Scientists lift veil on Saturn's weird moons
This March 2006 NASA Cassini space probe
mosaic image shows Saturn's moon Enceladus.
Little by little, two moons of Saturn that
rank among the enduring enigmas of the Solar
System are shedding their mystery. Using the
orbiting US-Italian probe Cassini, scientists
are getting astonishing close-up looks of
Enceladus. and Iapetus.(AFP/NASA/File)

Phoenix Mars Lander
This image provided by NASA shows an image taken by the Surface Stereo Imager on Sol 49, or the 49th Martian day of the mission Monday July 14, 2008, shows the silver colored rasp protruding from NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander's Robotic Arm scoop. The scoop is inverted and the rasp is pointing up. Shown with its forks pointing toward the ground is the thermal and electrical conductivity probe, at the lower right. (AP Photo/NASA)

Mercury has a comet-like tail
Nov. 3, 2009. This enhanced-color view was created with a statistical technique
that highlights subtle color variations seen in the 11 filters of MESSENGER's
wide-angle camera. The colors are often related to the composition
of underlying material.

Wind and Snow Do Strange Things on Mars
This is one of the newly posted images from more than 1,000 observations by the high resolution camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter provided by NASA Thursday Sept. 18, 2008. This image shows the Dune Field in an Impact Crater Near Cerberus Fossae. AP Photo/NASA - JPL/University of Arizona

Mosaic of Venus' Surface
In this photo released by the European Space Agency on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, the mosaic of the Venusian surface, obtained thanks to radar images from NASA's Magellan spacecraft, is seen. Nearby planet Venus is looking a bit more Earth-like with frequent bursts of lightning confirmed by a new European space probe. For nearly three decades, astronomers have said Venus probably had lightning, ever since a 1978 NASA probe showed signs of electrical activity in its atmosphere. But experts were not sure because of signal interference. Gaps in the Magellan data were filled in with Pioneer and Venera data. (AP Photo/ESA/NASA/HO)

Saturn's Hexagon
The Cassini spacecraft circling Saturn takes a look at an odd hexagon-shaped feature at the ringed planet's north pole. NASA released the view above, which yields an infrared take on the Saturnian oddity. The red color indicates heat, which wells up from the warm interior of Saturn, while clouds about 62 miles (100 kilometers) block light to cause the dark silhouette lines. The blue hues are the result of sunlight striking the far edge of Saturn, since the rest of this image was taken during nighttime conditions. Cassini used its visual and infrared mapping spectrometer to capture this view in what is the first complete look of the entire feature and north pole region in a single shot. Scientists have known about Saturn's odd hexagon-like feature for more than two decades, when it turned up in images snapped by NASA's Voyager 1 & 2 probes.
Wow!
The code "6EQUJ5" indicates a radio signal detected in 1977 at the Big Ear Radio Observatory in Ohio - a signal so strong that astronomer Jerry Ehman wrote "Wow!"
Eagle Nebula
A detail of the Eagle Nebula (M16) showing a portion of a pillar of gas and dust. Light from nearby bright, hot, young stars is sculpting the cloud into intricate forms and causing the gas to glow.

Mars Orbiter Camera
In this photo provided by NASA, a suite of mid-latitude gullies on a crater wall are seen as captured by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC). These gullies, which may have formed in relatively recent martian history by erosion caused by flowing, liquid water, are located in a crater on the east rim of Newton Crater.
Face on Mars
A feature on the surface of Mars, in which some people believe they see a face, is shown in a photograph sent by the Viking spacecraft July 31, 1976. The 1976 NASA press release said the formation "resembles a human head." However, NASA scientists had already correctly interpreted the image as an optical illusion caused by the illumination angle of the Sun, the formation's surface morphology and the resulting shadows, giving the impression of eyes, nose and mouth.
